Vocational Committee

Contact Chris Waddington : Vocational Commitee Chairman (2010 - 2011)

The Vocational Committee addresses local community needs for educational and training bursaries, advice to young job seekers and educational competitions, also many vocation-oriented visits and cultural activities for Club members themselves. We seek to promote understanding and highest ethical standards in business and professional life - Rotary service through the medium of our workplaces. We have won the District Shield on several occasions for the range of our projects.

Just some of our events:

  • With support of other local Rotary Clubs our annual Design & Technology Tournament in 2010 challenged 100 pupils in teams from twelve local secondary schools. The project is annlunced on the day and recent examples include planning, designing, building and demonstrating a crane capable of lifting a container of radioactive waste (a tennis ball!) from a box and placing it on a specific target, using simple materials (wood, cardboard, wire, motors, pulleys etc).
  • Primary Schools' Essay competition on the subject of "What I want to be when I grow up". Each year the 3 best pupils from each school each gain a certificate, the top one a book token and the overall winner a day at a place specializing in their choice of vocation.
  • (Hertfordshire) Young Musician competition at Haileybury Chapel for £500 first prize.
  • "What's My Line" interviews at Broxbourne School.
  • Club outings to National Air Traffic Control Centre,Tilbury Docks, Magic Circle, Prince of Wales' gardens at Highgrove, Tower of London (ceremony of the Keys), 17th C Chateau Donchery in N. France, Leicester Space Centre and Glenmorangie for whisky lovers. A weekend away (Lake Garda in 2008) rounds off each year.
  • Mock interviews at local schools for leavers and mentoring for under achievers
