Community Service
Contact John Stagg (Community Service Committee Chairman 2010 - 2011) via The Secretary
Perhaps the best known face of Rotary, the Community Service Committee, ably led by Rtn John Stagg, handles help and advice to the aged, handicapped, infirm and to young people and all others in need either directly or through local charitable organisations. Some notable examples have been:
- Donation of £5,000 in 2006 to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People which covered training of 'Molly' for a local deaf person. In the UK around nine million people have some deafness and 650,000 are profoundly deaf and "hearing" dogs change their lives.
- Past President Jeff Ryan spearheaded a Five Clubs blanket collection for Pakistan earthquake victims - the public response was fantastic and earned our club the thanks of HRH Countess of Wessex.
- Sponsorship of Mercy Ships that supply medical/operative facilities to those in desperate need e.g. in Africa.
- £1000 to repair Bushby Hall Over 60s Club heating system which collapsed in cold weather of Feb 2007. Other ad hoc donations to local young and needy.
- Kids Out - taking youngsters from Hailey Hall School for a day out to Whipsnade Zoo
- Easter Dinner and entertainment at Broxbourne Civic Hall for the local elderly and infirm - fun and fellowship for around 300 each year. Braille menus provided.
- Summer evening drives and pub meal for older community members
- Transport each month for those attending the George Fuller Club
- Support for St John and Red Cross and £15,000 for a new ambulance/bus for Belmont Home in 2005
- CD ROMs for local schools on the theme of "Coping With Life" - topics such as bullying and family change
- Charity Fund donations to Keech Childrens and Isobel Hospices
- Tending Commonwealth War Graves in Broxbourne, Wormley and Hoddesdon
